Much of the gold mined is actually from gold ore rather then actual Gold specimens. The ore is often brown, iron-stained rock or massive white Quartz, and usually contains only minute traces of gold. To extract the gold, the ore is crushed, then the gold is separated from the ore by various methods.
Prospecting from Orbit. Mining for ore isn't what it used to be. A hundred years ago when a mining operation happened upon a copper vein or a gold deposit, the outfit would often just rip out the local flora, excavate the land, and dump the resulting waste and rubble in the nearest pristine stream or flowering meadow.
If the metal contains <4% nickel, then the metal chunk or rock is not a meteorite. If the metal contains >0.02% chromium (Cr) or manganese (Mn), then it is not a meteorite, however. If you have a rock that contains between 1.0 and 1.8% nickel (whole-rock analysis), whether or not it appears to contain metal, then the rock might be a meteorite.
Specimen has a cut surface which exposes the ore inside the rock. When you tip the specimen in the light the x.s. through the ore crystals are very apparent : Gold Mine Ore Mineral # 1832 A close-up view of the specimen above showing the both the ore and some Rhodonite in the specimen which is common in ore samples from this location.

Sep 22, 2011· Quartz veins can get very large. This image shows a part of the Eschbacher Klippen, a quartz vein outcrop that has weathered out of the softer surrounding rocks in the Taunus mountains north-west of Frankfurt, Germany. Although the rock appears brown, it is almost pure quartz and only superficially stained by iron and manganese oxides.

When miners find rock containing mineral ore, they first extract the rock from the earth. This can be a huge process, sometimes displacing millions of tons of dirt. The rock is then crushed by powerful machinery. Metal is extracted from the crushed ore by one …

Metal ores are generally oxides, sulfides, silicates, or native metals (such as native copper) that are not commonly concentrated in the Earth's crust, or noble metals (not usually forming compounds) such as gold. The ores must be processed to extract the elements of interest from the waste rock and from the ore minerals.
So here’s a list of the top 10 most precious metals in the world. A good handheld XRF can tell you what metal you have within the Most Rare Gold Minerals. 1. Rhodium This extremely rare, valuable and silvery-colored metal is commonly used for its reflective properties. It has a high melting point and an amazing ability to withstand corrosion.

Silver ores, Silver Rocks and Minerals are easily fused before the blowpipe flame, either with or without carbonate of soda. The resulting globule of metal, of its characteristic white colour, can be readily hammered out or cut by a knife.
Powdering the rock The next step was to take the crushed pieces of rock and make them even smaller. We used a heavy metal rod (a broken half shaft from a four wheel drive) and smashed the small bits of rock in a saucepan. The rock needed to be powdered for us to get to all the gold within the rock.
An ore is heated with chemicals until it melts and the pure metal separates out as a liquid. The liquid then cools and hardens. A few metals, such as gold, silver, and copper can be found in pure form as metal elements. Nuggets or flakes of these metals can be taken straight from rock, but this is uncommon.

Because of this, it is helpful to quickly and efficiently test to see if a rock may have elements of silver ore trapped inside. This is done by heating the rock and submerging it in water. If metals float to the surface in the form of dark grime, then silver ore could be present in the rock.
